- 2. Blue belt
- 3. Purple belt
- 4. Brown belt
- 5. Black belt
These are the adult belt divisions listed in IBJJF competition materials. The full IBJJF belt system extends beyond black through red.
Why kids have a separate belt system
The IBJJF kids graduation systems give children steps within their belt progression through degrees and stripes. IBJJF suggests three systems: monthly, triannual and quarterly. Each academy can choose the system that fits its kids program, so children's progress doesn't follow one universal copy of the adult five-belt order.
Those IBJJF system names don't promise when your child will receive a stripe or belt.
Ask your child's instructor which system the academy uses and what the next belt means within that program.
How long does each belt take?
There isn't one timetable for every BJJ student. The IBJJF Graduation System gives instructors guidelines for advancing students through the belts. IBJJF minimum requirements aren't a promise that you'll receive a belt after a set amount of time.
Your BJJ instructor or academy decides when you move to the next belt. Ask your instructor what they need to see in your training and what you should work on next.
